The Watch 2012 also known as Neighbourhood Watch

4 comments :

What's it about:
4 suburban dudes, each with their own motive, united by one man to hunt down a recent murder of a security guard, trouble ensues when they find out that their killer isn't your friendly neighborhood spider-man.

When the town takes it as a joke, it's up to them to save the world?!

With a logo like that, you iz confirm awesome, with tigers and fire and wings.
What I would say about it:

Just to put it out in the open, the plot was cliche, the story was predictable and the whole show was full of plot holes.
Despite these obvious flaws, The Watch proved to be an entertaining film, they picked the right people to do the right job.
I can see that the dialogues had many improvisions worked in to it. So if you are not good at catching puns and parodies, you might miss out of a lot of the fun. But the movie itself may prove to be very vulgar for certain people but that's the way I like it,

It DOES have a tiny moment of suspense, and then it spirals out of proportion.

If you ever plan to watch this film, sit back and let it take you on a ride. It's just plain fun comedy, billion of lightyears to be the best comedy ever though. Haha.

The alien looks like a helm less predator. haha

"A punny film that would probably receive the most aggresive negative reviews but would be much enjoyable for a night of light hearted fun" - benjaminfoo.com
Crowd favorite?
I am guessing the crowd favorite would most probably be british native Richard Ayoade as Jamarcus.

He also heads the british comedy the IT Crowd, loads of fun in that series too!

Sadako 3D

2 comments :

In no circumstances would you go over to  help out a hand that comes out of a well.
What's it about:
Following the urban legend of a girl who was thrown down a well when she was still alive when falling, her vengeful spirit roams the human world in a hunger to wipe out anyone that sees a mysterious video.

Fast forward into the present, an individual with nothing but hatred for the world intends to summon her soul back from the well and wreak havoc on the surface dwellers.

Koji Seto aka kamen rider Kiva plays a very sissy boyfriend.
What I would say about it:

Being a J-fanatic, I am of course looking forward to this movie.

To an average seeker of horror flicks, some of the scares and the eerie-ness it gives at the beginning of the movie were fair enough. Just like many Japan films, it will come to a certain point where they over rely on the CG effects and make the whole movie look comedic (CG is super cheap in Japan).

There is definitely a lot of confusion with the plot if you have not read the novels it was based on but the general audience (like all japanese films) are mostly targeted to their own countrymen. Call it selfish or whatever, I personally quite familiar with the premises that these films work around.

If it weren't for the overly CG feel from the final scenes the movie would have been a lot more creepier, trust me... the older Japanese films were much creepier because they did all without CG.

The soundtrack needed a little bit more creep to it because some scenes would be much better without the background music.

However, I am quite sure there were many scared audience today as I heard many awkward laughs and effort to ease up the air in some scenes.

Most of the scenes were filmed for 3D hence a 2D version would have affected the experience. So if you plan to watch a 2D version, downloading it when the subs are out might be a better choice.

Have some  fun watching it with your friends, throwing a little bit of cash for some fun wouldn't hurt once in awhile.

I would have went even if i did not receive passes to watch it earlier. :)

The failed sacrifices

Critic Mode:
"Perhaps relying on CG for cheap scares was not the best way to film this movie, they should have put more effort into the more conventional way of filming Japanese Horror movies which were once the most feared movies." benjaminfoo of benjaminfoo.com

Extra facts for Japanese films :)

  • Koji Seto is the main actor for the Kamen Rider series, Kamen Rider Kiva
  • Yusuke Yamamoto who plays Kashiwada Seiji ( the mad individual) is known for his role as Kamen Rider Sasword.
  • Ai Hashimoto who plays Sadako is also acting in another horror thriller which is based on the Light Novel / Anime "Another" .  http://asianwiki.com/Another_(2012-Japanese_Movie) Check out the trailer.

AniManGaki 2012 at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre :)

12 comments :

As the annual AniManGaki comes and goes, let me have a little post on how it all went! But first, for you first timers who have never heard of AniManGaki before here is a short intro~
"Making its debut in 2009, AniManGaki is the brainchild of Sun-U Anime Club's founder, Yvonne Sing Yee Wen. The event was formed by fans, for fans; with the sole purpose of bringing together fans and lovers of anime from all walks of life. Branded "The Trendsetter", AniManGaki continues to surprise visitors each year with something new.
This year, AniManGaki 2012 will be a solo effort brought to you by the AniManGaki Organizing Committee. Your favourite ACG event is now back, evolving bigger and better at a brand new venue -- the Sunway Pyramid Convention Center! And to celebrate an amazing school year, we're going with the High School (Koukou) theme!"So get ready for some fun yo!"
For more info about this yearly event click here! --> http://animangaki.com/abt_amg.php
OR AniManGaki Facebook Page

One can never escape the ticket counter if you want to enjoy the full experience of such an event, of course you can just hang around the outskirts of the premises to catch the never-ending flow of cosplayers but the whole event is not just about the cosplayers even though they do play a big part in both attracting on-lookers and friendly meet ups alike :).

It's RM15 per entrance ticket for this year and you can get it at a cheaper price by bundling a two day pass for just RM25!

I also like how they have prepared a storage area and a lost and found counter because we ALL know how missing items and limited space can be a problem in ACG events such as this. Kudos! for the considerate arrangement and i do hope there weren't many problems on it!

I also happened to find a faithful puppy awaiting the return of it's owner at one of the counters >.<.

Moving along after giving the puppy a little petting session, let's have a look at a small portion of the crowd~ to be honest I wasn't really expecting such a large crowd although this WAS my first AniManGaki ~

Before we go further, let's have a few cosplayers here shall we? :)
Do let me know in the comments on which character are they if i got it wrong. (I am only a sub-Otaku,paiseh~)

Kuni-chan from Shangri-La

Help pls >.<

A little help here with Ms. Midori as well >.<"

Moving along with the crowd, as you pass the entrance you will be seeing a lot of booths that are in generals split into two types, one is the retailer booths (by companies) and the other would be the Artist booths (personal projects).

Paranorman 2012

5 comments :

Just a daily morning ritual.
What's it about:
Norman, a not so ordinary boy. His ability to see and talk to ghost have gotten him ridiculed and mostly shunned by his whole community. Just as he was scared of his own ability to see ghosts, he learns that it is his own abilities that could save the whole town from doom.

A movie of stop-motion brought by the creators of one of my favorite -Coraline. Comes Paranorman.

duh~ is class over yet?
What I would say about it:
To start it all, the movie was impressive and enjoyable.

A humble beginning for an awkward character slowly unfolds to a tale that gave more than just a twist, the jokes were subtle and gave you a giggle as to not spoil the whole movie. It made you smile.

The movie would not be as entertaining if it was made like a normal animation or even a CG one for that matter, it needed that special touch and stop motion animation really did the trick. With technology these days, the stop motion was rendered almost flawlessly with modern day engines giving it a much smoother flow for the movements, one could easily argue which one the prefer though.

The music was enjoyable and the suspense was much appreciated. They might be a few small plot holes that need not be mention here because I felt that it was not too a big a deal, and mentioning it here will spoil your whole experience.

The thing I like the most was the camera angle, the production team explored various nicely planned angles that most likely could not be done with a real life film
.
It didn't drag, and it didn't try hard to hard sell family or moral values but it is noted n all of us about it's message.

The finale was one of my favorite scene, the final confrontation was visually amusing and engaging. When it was all over, he wasn't cheered like a hero and that was what made it real.

It may not be as dark as Coraline but it was a master of it's own story.

Rating: 4/5

Here are some bonus material that are quite interesting from their marketing.  :)

Critic Mode:
"This one goes into my books, the trailer may not be interesting but the little twists that it gave brought the film to life and kept it alive through the end. One of the must watch this quarterbenjaminfoo of benjaminfoo.com
Sidenote: The only other animation to come that might top this for the year would be Frankenweenie in November.

The Bourne Legacy 2012

4 comments :

What's it about:
The 4th of the Bourne installments, taking a different back story to this one is the absence of Jason Bourne, the original escapist who was hunted down. The story revolves around the same conspiracy that the Jason Bourne was involved in, giving a wider perspective of the projects that were run by the government for superhuman and medical research.

Here comes, Aaron Cross- Another "agent" who finds himself being chased down by the very people who controls him. Uncovering the bits and pieces of this conspiracy and inching towards the truth of his own.

What I would say about it:
I am still very skeptical over the need to continue on with the "Bourne" story from a different angle, taking you on cheap thrill rides of the same kind.

The story and plots are actually quite similar to the first movie, besides the memory loss. Although the film explores the possibility of a bigger universe enacted from the first Bourne movie, it seems that Bourne's existence (base on this movie) is non-threatening considering the fact that in the first 3 movies that chased him around the whole globe. I fail to see the connection

The new guy, Jeremy Renner was the lead role. I have no opinion on Jeremy Renner as I see him having a good future in the action flick genre, I just feel the the whole film was rather repetitive and "done before"

Jason Bourne wasn't even in the same experiments as Aaron Cross, so why "Bourne Legacy" , is this referring the consipiracy as the "Bourne incident"

The actions weren't even that impressive, but the music score was intense.  It's chasing and more chasing, very little was explained about the rest of the "conspiracy". It was just focused on Cross's (Jeremy) attempts to flee from his assassins and to find a way to stay alive.

You might be mildly entertained by the motorcycle chases and short quick action sequences but other than that, the movie lacks a good cliff hanger and could easily be mistaken for a stand alone movie if not for the frequent mention of the name "Bourne"

Any other movie spawning from this franchise needs Jason Bourne to be in it, if they ever want to bring back the suspense filled plot before this.

Rating: 1.5/5

"I might have just been cheated to watch a cheap action flick using the same title of a better action flick, you watch it at your own risk. They should have just named this movie Bourne CrossOVERbenjaminfoo of benjaminfoo.com

Step Up 4 Revolution

3 comments :

Well, it always starts like this.
What's it about:
Another installment of the Step Up franchise that has nothing to do with the previous ones, it's about a dancing boy meeting a dancing chick. Dancing boy wants to dance and make hits so he can win some cash with his Flash Mob idea while dancing girl wants a career in dancing but millionaire dad no likey that idea! (forgive my sudden way of writing :p )

It's not about fame this time though, it's about expression. Then again, the previous ones was also about expression but for a different result. Oh who am I kidding, same plot different dance.

NOT the only scene that looked better in the trailer.
What I would say about it:
To sum it all up, Step Up 4 revolution brings around the same things that the franchise wants to tell, the freedom to express yourself through passion and in this case, Getting Jiggy With It.

Bringing in dancers from various reality shows would certainly bring up the intensity of the dances and I have no quarrels with the standard of the dancers in this show. All were stunning, all were good and all of them were DANCERS, not actors. They express better with their dance hence the acting was far from good. (Dancers should be dancing, not acting! Dancers should have more recognition even if they weren't featured in a film)

4 sets of main Flash Mob was choreographed and 1 Finale, so all together you have 5 music videos getting mashed together to make a story, the places chosen for the flash mobs were very unique, starting from the streets, to a more refined place ( i like this one the best so don't want to spoil it), a restaurant and a launch, and of course the finale which you have all scene in the trailer.

The choreography is good and the dancers too, but something ruined the whole thing, it was the camera angle and editing. premature cuts of the dance moves and sudden stops made the dance seem sloppy and incomplete, the edits should be showing what was happening instead of moving from dance move to another completely different move. Honestly, watching it on the reality shows would be far more entertaining.

The director should know by now that the audience wants the dance not the story, not the plot. but the dances most of all.

The cuts were so annoying that as impressive as the dances might have been, it had been ruined.

I do hope they will churn out a complete video without the unnecessary cuts at the wrong time. The finale mob was ended in very abrupt way as well.

Rating: 2/5

Critic Mode:
"Very little evolution in this so called revolution, they should give this a proper burial and move on. Dances and Mobs are mainstream now, a properly choreographed dance with effects is not going to satisfy anymore. Everything was more exciting in the trailerbenjaminfoo of benjaminfoo.com
